About This Project

OMIZU Architecture was pleased to assist the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Airports Division (DOTA) with improvements to the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The project included new restroom building for Menʻs restroom amenities and the conversion of an existing restroom building into a higher-capacity Womenʻs restroom. Finish flooring, wall tile and accented ceilings were designed not only to be maintainable and durable, but to provide a contemporary Hawaiian aesthetic. DOTA also requested us to develop a permanent covered walkway system to provide relief from the year-round Kona elements (sun and rain during the winter months) for passengers to move comfortably from the TSA central checkpoint to the outbound gates. Accents in steel trellis-work and wood-look ceiling planks pay respect to the open-air design elements throughout the airport covered areas.
